Public Domain Sources

As promised in my last post, here are top 3 of my favourite locations on the web for public domain materials:

1) Internet Archive

The front page states that the Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. This is the site I usually start all my research with but do be mindful that not everything on the internet archive is in the public domain. This is clearly stated in the licensing information of each material you browse through.

2) Project Gutenberg

There is a wealth of eBooks here as the site's mission is "To encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". The last count was over 50,000 of them. The materials are digitized and proof read by volunteers, so a donation is recommended although not mandatory.

3) WikiMedia Commons

The site states that the page is a collection of 37,281,473 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute. I usually source graphic images from this site to be added to an ebook or project that I am working on.

The above are only a snippet of the wealth of online resources available that shares public domain materials. There are many others which I will share in due course.

Lastly, do make sure you do your research before releasing or remixing the above mentioned material to sell on as your own. This is due to the reason that copyright laws differ from one country to another. Most of the sites above are based on the common law in the US.

Have fun and do share the products you have created and if there are any other sources that can help others in creating their own product using public domain materials.

Selling Public Domain Products

Once in a while you might lack experience or don't know where to start with creating your first digital product. One of the simplest form is to sell public domain products.

So what is this "public domain" you are talking about?

In my own words, public domain refers to copyright free or a state of being owned by the public. This means that you are not restricted legally (no royalties or permission required) to do as you wish with works that fall within the public domain. Examples may include, publications, written books and even movies.

Can you really make money selling public domain products?

Well, Walt Disney did with their blockbuster fairy tales like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs & Cinderella to name a few.

What is the catch then?

Do be warned that copyright laws do differ in various countries and do make sure you do your research or contact an expert. It is also common for folks to just resell a public domain product as it is. I would highly recommending customizing it before reselling it on to make it unique.

Stay tuned next week where I share my favourite locations online to source public domain products that you can start selling in a wink of an eye.

Speak in a week's time!

Automation is Key

Automating your sales and the whole journey of customers being able to purchase your product to the delivery is the key to a hands free online business. There are several tools that could help support this journey. I have highlighted in the pass several cost effective sites to help you with that.

But where do I start?

The most basic is the payment processing where you are able to take payment from customers and sending them their digital product once a successful payment has been made. This transaction can be fully automated with most payment providers like paypal where you provide a link to your file to be displayed after the payment is taken. Once you make your first initial setup, it will continue on generating you income on successful sales without the need for you lifting a finger.

I have set up multiple sales pages and products for sale but am not getting any traffic?

Constant flow of high quality traffic to your site is key. There are multiple sources of paid traffic that you can attempt to tap into or simply rely on free sources to promote your sales page. The old term of build and they will come is no longer valid as there are literally billions of existing sites and millions mushrooming everyday. So, the space is super competitive and will only get increasingly so.

Remember to continue experimenting as there is no one size fit all solution. If you can automate the sales and delivery of your products with a constant flow of visitors that you can convert them into successful sales, you are on your journey to success.

Till next week, enjoy what's left of your weekend!

Free Domain Names for your Website

When starting out, I decided to get everything for free to cut costs. Before I share the sites that offer free domain names, please note of the below: The Cons

1. A word of caution/warning, such providers can disappear without a trace overnight. This happened to the provider .co.cc.

2. Such domains do not rank highly on search engines due to the likeliness of abuse.

3. The provider may remove your domain without any explanation.

All of the above will hurt your business if you have spent years on building and growing your online presence. With the above out of the way, here are some of my favourites which you may find useful:

1. .tk
2. .ml
3. .ga
4. .cf
5. .gq
6. .biz.ht
7. .biz.nf
8. .co.nf
9. .co.vu
10. .cu.cc

If you can afford it, I do highly recommend you register for a domain name for your online business and you can try out my web hosting site.

Till next time, take care!
